One of the most widespread texts associated with the Wiccan religion is the Charge of the Goddess Inspired by Arcadia, Gospel of The Witches, Doreen Valiente composed Charge of the Goddess for use in Gardnerian rituals. The Charge was originally composed by Doreen Valiente for use in Gardnerian rituals. It became so popular that it was soon incorporated into the rituals and the teachings of most Wiccan traditions. As with most mythical scripture that survives across time and place, there are many personal interpretations and variations of the original. Though the following Charge of the Goddess may vary somewhat from the original text, the original intent and message are still intact.

Whenever ye have need of anything, once in the month, and better it be when the moon is full, then shall ye gather in a secret place and adore me, the Mother of the Stars, Eternal Maiden, and Queen of all Witcheries. There shall ye assemble, who are intent to learn of my mysteries, and who have not yet won my deepest secrets. And under my watchful eye will ye be taught that which is unknown.

To the glory of all creation, sing, feast, dance, make music, and love all in my presence. For mine is the ecstasy of the spirit, and mine is also the joy on earth, for my law is love unto all beings.

I beseech thee to keep pure your highest ideals, strive ever towards them, let none stop ye or turn ye aside. For mine is the secret that opens the door of youth, mine is the cup of wine of life, and mine is the Cauldron of Cerridwen - the Holy Grail of immortality.

I am the gracious Goddess, who gives the gift of joy unto the heart of man. When ye gather in my name I shall give thee knowledge of the spirit eternal, and beyond death I grant thee peace and freedom, and in time union with those who have gone before.

Hear now the words of the Star Goddess, whose body encircles the universe. I am the beauty of the green earth, and the white moon amongst the stars, and the mystery of the waters, and the desire of all men.

I call unto your soul to arise and come unto me, for I am the soul of all nature who giveth life unto the universe. From me all things proceed, and unto me all things must return. Beloved of the gods and men, let my innermost divine self be molded in the raptures of the infinite. Let my worship be within thy heart, for rejoice, all acts of love and pleasure are my rituals.

Therefore, let there always be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence within ye. And thee who seek me out, know that seeking and yearning shall avail thee not, unless thou knowest the mystery. For that which thou seek, if thou shall not find it within, thou will never find it without. For behold, I have been with thee from the beginning and I am that which is attained at the end of desire. Remember this, as it shall light the way, and lead you unto thine most holy of all mysteries.

The Witches7 Chant _

Simple, direct, and intuitive, "The Witches' Chant" evokes a time when Wiccans and Pagans explained their mysteries in poetic verse. This particular chant was first revealed to the public in 1974 in The Grimoire of Lady Sheba, who was an honorary Gardnerian and Hereditary Witch. Although her book has been out of print for several decades, her teachings are still considered to be of great value and part of Wiccan history.

Through poetic verse, "The Witches' Chant" details the beliefs and practices of the ancient, matrifocal Witch Cult of Old Europe. The four quarters and the moon are evoked, tools are set upon an altar, and magic rites are enacted before the Queen of Heaven and the Horned Hunter.

Darksome night and shining moon, Harken to the Witches Rune. East then South, West then North Hear! Come! I call thee forth.

By all the powers of Land and Sea, Be obedient unto me. Wand, and Pentacle, and Sword, Harken ye unto my word.

Cords and Censer, Scourge and Knife, Waken all into life. Powers of the Witches' Blade, Come ye as the charge is made.

Queen of Heaven, Queen of Hell Send your aid unto this spell. Horned Hunter of the night, Work my will by magic rite.

By all the powers of Land and Sea, As I do say, "so mote it be." By all the might of Moon and Sun As I do will, it shall be done.
