Herbs to Treat Morning Sickness

To alleviate the symptoms of nausea and vomiting associated with morning sickness, chew and swallow a few aniseeds and/or inhale the scent of crushed fresh peppermint leaves or peppermint essential oil. Warning: Do not take peppermint oil internally. It can be quite toxic, even in small quantities. Peppermint tea, which contains volatile oils that may over stimulate the nervous system of an unborn child, should also be avoided by pregnant women.

For severe morning sickness, steep one teaspoon of grated gingerroot (or a one-inch-long chunk of peeled gingerroot), V teaspoon of spearmint, and V teaspoon of meadowsweet in one cup of boiling water for 10 to 20 minutes. Strain and sweeten with honey or sugar (if desired) before drinking. Many herbalists recommend two to three cups per day. Warning: Women who have a history of miscarriage should avoid using ginger. When taken internally in large amounts, this herb may bring on miscarriage in the early months of pregnancy.
