Dream Interpretation

Formally known as "oneiromancy," the interpretation of dreams and nightmares to predict events of the future is one of the oldest and simplest forms of divination known to mankind.

Long before Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud began their studies and analyses of the dream-state, it was widely believed that existing within every dream was a doorway leading to a supernatural dimension in which clues to reveal the mysteries of the past, the present, and the future could be found.

Not all dreams are prophetic in nature. However, there are some dreams that do come true, especially those that are repeated three nights in a row, according to occult folklore. Some speak to us in a very direct fashion, while others conceal their messages behind a language of arcane symbolism that requires deciphering before an understanding can be gained.

Dreams have been defined as "visions during sleep," and each one is said to hold its own particular significance. Where dream symbols are concerned, they abound in the thousands, if not hundreds of thousands. Their meanings, according to dream interpretation author Gustavus Hindman Miller, are "as varied, as intricate, and as infinite as our thoughts."

However, this chapter will focus solely on the various dream symbols that relate to herbs and other plants, including flowers and trees. Many of the interpretations herein have been gathered from a number of sources (namely Gustavus Hindman Miller's 10,000 Dreams Interpreted, Nerys Dee's The Dreamer's Workbook, and Ann Ree Colton's Watch Your Dreams), and some are my own personal interpretations.
