The devil pod (also known as "bat nut" and "goat head") is the glossy black seedpod of an aquatic Asian plant, Trapa bicornis. Naturally shaped like a flying bat or a goat-horned devil, these unusual pods also have what has been described as "a face of evil" on both their sides. Although devil pods can be found on some altars as an offering to deities of the darker realms, many hoodoo practitioners use them in a more positive fashion to guard against evil forces. For this purpose they are often carried in mojo bags or positioned above doorways, facing outward like the guardian "door demons" found perched above the entrances to ancient Tibetan temples.
