Grow Your Own Herb Garden
An Esbat of the wort moon is an appropriate time for wortcunning (the knowledge and use of the healing and magickal properties of herbs). Many covens, as well as solitaries, dedicate this night to the ritual charging of herbs prior to their preparation and storage. It is also an ideal time for making herbal spell candles, herbal oils, and incense, as well as performing herb-related magick, and giving thanks and presenting offerings, to the spirits that dwell in and watch over a Witch's herb garden. As you place an offering in the garden beneath the rays of the wort moon bright, the spirits may come forth from their secret hiding places among the shadows and reveal to you the many secrets of magickal herbalism.
The following is an alphabetically-arranged list of Pagan gods and goddesses from various pantheons throughout the world. Each deity is linked in one way or another to plants, trees, flowers, medicinal herbs, magickal herbs, and the planting and or harvesting of crops. Invoke one the next time you plant an herb garden, gather wildflowers, or celebrate a harvest rite. Abellio Romano-Celtic (Gallic) god of apple trees. Farmers would leave milk for the faeries that they might bring good fortune, young girls recited love charms while planting herbs in soil embedded with a would-be lover's footprint. On Hallowe'en, housewives opened their windows and placed garlic on the window ledge so that only the good family dead might enter and take shelter from the cold.
As they have such a wide variety of uses in magick, you will probably need quite a large supply. Fortunately, herbs are, for the most part, very easy to grow - and very ornamental. If you have a garden you can set aside a small area specifically for cultivating herbs. Alternatively, you can create an indoor garden of herbs grown in pots, so that you have a ready supply of growing energy. Once picked, all your herbs can be used either fresh, for example on your altar, or dried, in healing sachets and poppets.

Fresh herbs or flowers can be added to your bath in the following way place them in a net or a piece of muslin - you could even use an old pair of tights - and hang them under the hot tap while you run a bath. At one time several different sorts of ritual knife were in use, which were differentiated by the color of their hilts. Most common were the Athame which had a black hilt, and the Boleen or Burin, which had a white hilt. The Athame was used to cast the circle, cut herbs, etc. The Boleen was used in the creation of magical artifacts. The Athame was sacred to the Goddess, while the Boleen was sacred to the God. This custom however is not in general use today. Today the term Athame is used to describe any ceremonial knife, and a single blade can serve all purposes. The color of the hilt is no longer necessarily black, but may be and often is of any color. Today Athame's often have hilts of wood or horn, while others have hilts of metal set with gem stones. In choosing an Athame, select one that appeals to YOU, and makes you feel magical to use.

An herbal bath fulfills the same purpose as a floorwash, but imparts the qualities of the herb to a person. An herbal bath is prepared by adding either a small quantity of concentrated tea or the fresh herbs themselves in a cheesecloth sachet, to warm bathwater. The person then immerses in the water, even to the point of momentarily immersing their head, so that every part of the body is exposed to the water. Then they remain in the water in a state of meditation for 15 to 30 minutes. After leaving the water, it is considered preferable to take the time to air dry. The herbal bath should be preceded by an appropriate prayer, and throughout the process of setting it up and taking it one should stay focused upon the intent of the ceremony.
