The use of crystals and stones is perhaps the latest re-discovery of ancient folk magic.
Countless books have been published on the subject, and many persons are now working with the magic of stones and discovering their abilities to improve their lives.
This widespread interest isn't difficult to explain. While crystals are certainly beautiful and possess intrinsic values, they also contain specific energies available for magical use. Stones have been utilized in magic since the earliest times, and with herbs, may have been the first magical tools.
Step into any New Age store and your eyes will be dazzled by a wide variety of crystals. Quartz crystal predominates and is found in dozens of specific structures and forms: double-terminated, castellated, anhydrous, phantom, red phantom, laser wands, and tabular are some currently prized shapes.
Colored varieties of quartz are also used in magic, such as amethyst (purple), carnelian (orange), citrine (yellowish), blue quartz, rose quartz, and so on.
Besides quartz, dozens of other types of stones are being used to promote health, draw love, attract money, bring peace, and to guard against ills of every kind. Many persons aren't aware that quartz crystal isn't the only type of stone called upon to release or to absorb energy.
Perhaps one hundred or more stones are currently being used in magic. Some have only been recently rediscovered. Fluorite, a stone virtually unknown outside mineralogical circles until quite recently, is now widely used to promote mental activity. Sugilite, a beautiful purplish stone, has been found to promote psychism and spirituality, and is commonly used to speed healing. Tourmaline is gathering its share of magical uses as well.
Folk magicians arouse, program, release, and direct the energies within stones. They don't simply pick one up and demand that it do its work; they work with these tools of the Earth.
Once empowered, folk magicians use stones in various ritual ways. They're worn, carried, slipped under the mattress, or placed on magical alters. Crystals are stroked onto the body and placed in the home to release their beneficial energies. They may also be combined with other tools, such as herbs and candles, in various manners during spells.
What do you feel when you think of diamonds? Or emeralds? Sapphires? Rubies? Do you associate them with greed? A lost-or found-love? Do you simply want to own them? We have formed certain associations with diamonds and other precious stones because of their lontar value and frequent use in wedding and engagement rings.
Some folk magicians certainly share such feelings, but those who've worked with stones see them in far different ways. Diamonds are stones of strength, reconciliation, healing, and protection; emeralds-love, money, health, psychic power; rubies-joy, wealth, and restful sleep.
Crystals have become bug business, as more individuals turn to them for their beauty and energies. They're the material signature of the New Age as well as ancient tools of folk magic.
