The Cycle Of The Moon

As I mentioned earlier in the chapter, as well as the months, the phases of the Moon offer scope for different kinds of magick during the individual monthly moon cycles. However, problems in interpretation of these energies can arise because astronomy and astrology are no longer regarded as the same thing. For example, to our ancestors, the astrological Dark of the Moon was the same as the astronomical dark - the first two and a half days of the cycle when the Moon is not visible at any hour of the day or night.

Encourages smallpox inoculation

During this time Mather also pursued his wide-ranging scientific interests. He wrote about fossils, astronomy, mathematics, zoology (the study of animals), entomology (a branch of zoology that deals with insects), ornithology (a branch of zoology dealing with birds), and botany (the study of plants). Like other clergymen, he studied and practiced medicine as an amateur. In his autobiography he explained that his attraction to medicine came about as a result of his own hypochondria (fear of illnesses). When he was a teenager he had an intense curiosity about medical literature. Devouring book after book, he eventually began to imagine that he himself had the symptoms of the diseases he was reading about. Over the years Mather became an authority on the causes and cures of mental illness, measles, scurvy (a disease caused by lack of vitamin C), fevers, and smallpox. In fact, in 1721 he was the foremost advocate of smallpox inoculation in America. (Smallpox is a highly contagious, often...

World Saviors And The Stars

In the Syrian, Arabian and Persian systems of astronomy, it was known as Massaeil, from which is derived Messiah. The Star of Jacob derives from the older astronomical systems in which virgin (Virgi) was depicted rising with an infant messiah (Messaeil) in her arms. Messaeil is made up of Messael-el (Messiah-God) and is found in the Virgo constellation. This rises at midnight on December 25th the star in the East. The Biblical wise men were astrologers.

Must fulfill family expectations

Increase Mather, the father of Cotton Mather, was an historian and prominent Boston clergyman. He was also a leader in the scientific community. Mather adopted the new ideas of such European scientists as Francis Bacon (1561-1626) and Robert Hooke (1635-1 7G3). He even incorporated scientific theories into his sermons. For instance, he tried to combat superstition by giving realistic explanations about comets and the nature of the universe. Newton's Comet of 168G in particular inspired his interest in astronomy (the study of stars and planets). Mather organized the Philosophical Club of Boston in 1683 one of the members was twenty-year-old Cotton Mather.

Questions to Consider

Astronomy The belief that a connection exists between the stars and other celestial bodies (the macrocosm) and humans (the microcosm). The stars, it was believed, influenced the life of individuals, and certain amulets, stones related to one's astrological sign and other such objects, provided protection against the fatal influence of celestial bodies.

History

By most accounts, the Druids were the keepers of traditional wisdom who were concerned with moral philosophy, natural phenomena and theology. They included both men and women, for women had a place of importance in Celtic society. The Druids influenced both the sacred and secular lives of the Celts. They conducted religious ceremonies, served as mediators between the people and gods, exercised influence over the moral, ethical and spiritual fabric of Celtic society through their teachings and divination and made political and judicial decisions. Their teachings included moral philosophy, ethics, astronomy, the law of nature, the power of the gods and the concept of immortality. Druids were skilled in the interpretation of omens, the correct rituals of sacrifice, the construction of a calendar, the medicine of herbs, the science of astronomy and the composition of poems. Ammianus, quoting Tima-

Avebury

At the western entrance of the henge once stood Beckhampton Avenue. It was destroyed by the Puritans and now only two stones, known as Adam and Eve or the Longstones, stand. No one knows where the avenue ended, but it is thought to have extended a mile and a half. Stukeley claims that it stretched from the two stones to the sarsen circles. Sir Norman Lockyer, a 20th-century astronomer, asserted that the Beckhampton Avenue and Cove features were orientated to the May sunrise and May ceremonials, and the West Kennet Avenue was once used to observe the morning rise of Alpha Centauri in November.

Folk Magic

Soon after, the advert of modern scientific inquiry occurred. As the horrors of the Medieval and Renaissance Witch persecutions faded from memory, humans began investigating the ways of nature in a new light. Magnetism, medicine and surgery, mathematics, and astronomy were codified and moved from the realm of superstition and magic to science.

Pagan God Memphis

God of wisdom, music, magic, medicine, astronomy, geometry, surveying, art and and writing. Historian, scribe and judge. Thoth's priests claimed Thoth was the Demi-Urge who created everything from sound. It was said that Thoth wrote books in which he set forth a fabulous knowldege of magic and incantation, and then concealed them in a crypt.

Persian Mages

The terms mage, Median, Persian, Babylonian, Chaldaean, and Syrian tend to function almost interchangeably in the following texts. The key to these identifications or associations lies in the Persian empire. The mages (Greek magos Old Persian makus) were the professional wise men of the Persian empire, whose expertise was by no means confined to religious matters. When the Persians first made their impact on the Greeks, they had already subsumed the Medes and had taken Babylon within their empire. The Chaldaeans were a series of tribal groups among the Babylonians. The Greeks came to associate them with astronomy and astrology in particular and with magic in general, but there is no indication that they had any such significance for the Babylonians themselves. Other Eastern peoples were added to the mix at a later stage. Syrians were perhaps added in the Seleucid period. The Seleucid kings took over much of the territory of the former Persian empire but were based in Syria. The A.D....

The Baron

From Astrology to Astronomy, from Alchemy to Chemistry, from animal magnetism to modern hypnotism, from trance inducing drugs to truth serums, from astral flights to airplanes, all of them had their origin in the ancient beliefs, in Witchcraft, in the Old Religion. And modern hypnotism has played a part in all ancient religious ceremonies, though neither called nor known as such then. The constant beat of the torn torn, the incense, the fires, the monotonous chants, the droned prayers, all of this supercharged suggestion led to trances, visions, possessions, some remarkable bodily feats, including the walking through fire, on burning coals, etc.
